Meet our just-released 2019 Reserve Collection

Published on: 2nd August 2021

Introducing our flagship Reserves. Wines that speak of time, effort and place in the purest of forms.

We are delighted to announce the release of our four outstanding 2019 Reserve wines.

Since 1997, we have strived to get the very best out of each grape. To select the best of the best in our cellar, isolate it, and present it to the world as our Reserve. We continue to stay true to our philosophy and only present Reserves that are worthy of wearing their label with pride.

In some years, it’s a collection of Reserves and in others, a sole stand-out. This year, we are proud to release all four varieties. Our 2019 Reserve Collection is a spectacular display of our best blocks, rows and parcels across our esteemed Yarra Valley sites. Powerful, concentrated and expressive, they speak of the season, the land and our efforts in the purest of forms.

What makes our 2019 Reserves spectacular…

The 2019 season saw a cold, dry winter and early spring that was followed by significant rainfall. Thankfully, these conditions saw excellent fruit set achieved across all varieties prior to December’s rain.

Rod Harrison, chief viticulturist, recounts how well our vines were set-up through January’s heat spikes, creating steady flavour development through to February. As a result, our grapes realised outstanding concentration, densely packed with flavour and ripe tannin.

Brendan Hawker, senior winemaker, notes that the level of intensity and concentration found in our 2019 Reserves is reflective of the warmer year. Having a range of vineyards from which we can build our blends allows Brendan and our team the luxury of careful block selection to arrive at perfectly harmonious Reserves.

“I’d like to recognise the hard work and commitment that goes into producing them, from both the vineyard and winery teams. I see this manifest when tasting the wines, in their intrinsic power and finesse, and their continuing legacy of quality.” – Brendan Hawker

This season saw the team hunting select cooler sites to coax out nuances of elegance and finesse, pairing with the inherent power of the vintage at hand. This, along with further detailed blending and barrel selection results in a quartet of proud and powerful Yering Station Reserves.

These wines are an absolute pleasure to drink now, but your patience will also be rewarded with careful cellaring over the next ten years.

Releasing with high accolades in tow from celebrated wine writers at Halliday Wine Companion, The Real Review and more. Browse the collection now.

When Should You Open Your Pinot Noir?

Published on: 17th May 2021

An age-old question in the world of wine. And like all good questions, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer.
____________________

Generally speaking, palates with limited tasting experience may prefer younger wines that showcase primary fruit flavours. A more experienced palate, however, may gravitate toward cellared wines that show the development of secondary characters, or those that are even more mature than that. Of course, the aforementioned is not always true as preferences are very personal and will vary from person to person, palate to palate.

Not too sure where your preferences lie? Should you have the opportunity, we always encourage the purchase of a dozen bottles – allowing for the best of both worlds. Enjoy half now, and the latter half at a later date.

If you follow this approach, it’s best to ensure you have the right set-up to store your wines in appropriate cellar-like conditions at home. Best practice for Pinot Noir, and all reds, dictates wine storage at a consistent temperature between 12 to 14 degrees celsius. If you don’t have a cool, dark spot in your home that will allow for these conditions, you may consider investing in a wine fridge to ensure your favourite bottles are never compromised.

What to expect if you drink now

This is an option that applies to every single one of our releases – from Little Yering through to Reserves. At Yering Station, you’ll never find us releasing a wine that’s not ready to be enjoyed in the moment.

If you’re opting for a Little Yering or Village Pinot Noir, expect freshness. Bright, juicy fruit-forward characters and subtle spice. These wines are specifically produced with youthful drinking in mind.

If you’re opting for a Pinot from our self-titled collection and upward, expect classic cool climate Pinot. Yarra Valley hallmarks to the forefront. Before release, these Pinots undergo their own barrel and bottle maturation, giving them the time and space to come into their own. This maturation process can be anywhere from 10 to 18 months.

What to expect if you cellar

While our Little Yering and Village Pinot Noirs are produced with stylistic ‘drink now’ intent, they too can benefit from careful cellaring. Putting these wines away for 3 to 5 years can often times showcase beautiful fruit development into a slightly more earthy space.

Our self-titled, Single Vineyard and Reserve Pinot Noirs are most definitely wines that will benefit from careful cellaring. Cellaring windows will vary from Pinot to Pinot and vintage to vintage, as well as your own personal preferences. We generally suggest 10 years, and in some cases 15+ years. If you’re drinking a cellared Yering Station Pinot, expect evolved flavours in the space of cranberry, forest figs, Russian toffee and truffles. In some cases – raisins, Christmas brandy cake and soft leathery spice as well.

Lastly, a general note when cellaring Pinot, is to always consider the interactions between acidity and tannins. Both of these elements bring mouthfeel and structure to a wine. During the aging process, these two elements also vastly persist, evolving the wine’s dynamic.

If you don’t have the time or space to cellar wines – let us do it for you. Visiting our Yarra Valley cellar door enables you to access our back-vintages which we’ve carefully cellared away in our underground museum. Becoming a Wine Club member also enables you access to back-vintage wines for purchase online.

Vintage Diary: End of Harvest

Published on: 13th April 2021

It’s hard to believe that we’re now at the tail end of the 2021 harvest, but here we are. Always a whirlwind and a joy.

The last of our picks go to Mourvèdre from our Springlane vineyard, along with Shiraz that makes its way into our crowd-favourite Fortified blend.

[L – R]: Frank, Bucky, Blake, Burnsy & Rod – who are the heart and soul of our Viticulture operations across our 5 vineyard sites.

It’s all smiles for Team Yering, who are elated at the fruit quality this vintage has yielded. Despite the season’s challenges, particularly so with rainfall, grape integrity has been masterfully maintained by our team. Pristine flavours and strong Yarra Valley hallmarks to the fore. We can’t wait to soon taste our way through these wines – and of course, for you to do the same.

Gourmet Traveller Wine: Premium Chardonnay Dinner

Published on: 29th March 2021

Earlier this month, Brendan Hawker joined the Gourmet Traveller Wine team in presenting some of the greatest Australian examples of new world Chardonnay. We were so proud to have our 2017 Reserve Chardonnay selected as one of the 14 wines on show, alongside other Australian greats from various wine regions.

Host, Nick Stock, took guests through a selection of 14 incredible wines, focusing on nuances, complexities and expressional diversity. Wines were presented in brackets, with the team at Bellota preparing a sublime 4-course dinner that magnificently paired with each flight.

An amazing evening and one to remember.

Enjoy last access to our 2017 Reserve Chardonnay before we soon close our cellar vaults. Visit our online store or cellar door to secure your allocation before it’s too late.

Vintage Diary: Winery Action

Published on: 18th March 2021

Our winery is bustling with V21 action. Meet just some of the faces of our passionate winery team.

It’s been a busy few weeks. Our winery is slowing filling up with Chardonnay and Pinot fruit, and now Shiraz fruit too. More to come from Vintage 2021 – the end is not yet in sight!

Vintage Diary: Scarlett Block

Published on: 9th March 2021

Arguably, one of our most magical sites to pick – Y07. This site produces the pinnacle of our Pinot Noir, responsible for all previous flagship Pinot Noir releases under the Scarlett label.

We consider our Y07 block as holding the deepest and most consistent of soils across all our sites. This allows our Pinot to beautifully handle seasonal stress and develop fruit complexity naturally. As the seasons pass, we’ve understood through the mediums of science and taste, that the flavours on this relatively small block will usually develop differently from top to bottom. This level of understanding, through technology such as EM38 mapping, has informed our picking and fermenting approach – the team harvesting and fermenting top versus bottom separately to capture and isolate those delicate nuances.

True to our process, the block was picked in two instalments – bottom rows first and top rows a week later. All rows were carefully harvested by hand, ensuring systematic sorting as the team went through. Quality is looking excellent as an early first read. The important next steps in the winery, however, will determine whether the fruit from this block will earn its place under the esteemed Scarlett label this vintage.

Our last Scarlett release, from 2017, was met with a stellar reception – receiving a rare 99-point score from James Halliday himself. Watch this space!

Vintage Diary: Y21 Pinot Noir

Published on: 4th March 2021

Early morning in the Valley, the top of our estate vineyard peeking through the trunks of our centuries-old Elms.

Our team were out early, picking Pinot in our Y21 block while the air was crisp and the grapes cold. The MV6 Pinot grapes you see here will make their way into our adored Village collection. This site was cropping at around 3.5 tonnes to the acre, and our entire team are extremely pleased with the level of quality coming through.

Next up is Pinot from our Springlane vineyard and next week, our beloved Y07 block – home to our Scarlett. Stay tuned Pinot lovers.
